If Your Grandma Can Do Crossfit, so can you

This inspire me monday speaks for itself. I came across this video of a 72 year old women doing FRAN, the mother of all crossfit workouts.

Many people watch videos of a Crossfit WOD and think, "I can never do that… that’s awesome, but I can’t do it. Not for me."

So here is my absolute proof that Crossfit is infinately Scaleable. Watch and be amazed. The link also provides a story from Barbara and how Crossfit has helped her live an independent and fun filled life at 72.

Super Bowl and Clean Eating??? Yes way!

So this idea popped into my head this morning because I’ve really been slacking on my food posts. But I was reminded that the Super Bowl is this Sunday and you all know what that means.. lots of junk food. Now, since I know all of you  have been eating clean since the beginning of the year and have been saving your cheat for this Sunday…. RIGHT??? Anyway, whether or not you decide to delve into feel-not-so-good foods you can still make your party snacks clean and still feel satisfied. Here is my "High Quality Food" Super Bowl line up.. my version of "eat this, not that”

1) Chips and Salsa (of the sweet potato variety)

I found these  at whole foods and I love them! I love to make my own sweet potato chips but this is so much easier! Get a few packs of these instead of regular potato or corn chips. Terra makes other varieties of tuber chips like carrot and sweet potato chips as well as beet and sweet potato chips.

Buy your favorite brand of low processed salsa or make your own. In fact use whatever wholesome dip you choose and these are sure to please everyone!

2) Fat Guacamole Devils

An amazing twist on a classic party food. I have never liked deviled eggs so these were a breath of fresh air. I would probably eat anything with avocados on it.

The recipe for these is on Marks Daily Apple. One of my favorite places for everything primal.

3) Mini Italian Sausage Meatballs with marinara for Dipping

Who loves those mini meatballs that are in the warmed Crockpot in some yummy sauce!? I do! You can find the recipe for these here.

I suggest making them mini size and after they are cooked you can keep them warm in a crockpot filled with sugar free marinara sauce.

4) Grain Free Zucchini Friti

Who doesn’t love stuff that is fried and breaded? Well now it’s worry free because you can use almond meal instead of flour or corn etc. Follow the directions here.

Serve with marinara sauce for dipping.

5) Homemade Chicken Wings

It’s easier than you think to make your own chicken wings. Here is one of my favorite recipes.

Alcohol:
1) Gluten free Beer
2) Red Wine
3) Homemade Margaritas

Mix 1 shot tequila with the juice from one lime and a splash of club soda. Add a bit of agave if you want some sweet.

4) Vodka Soda with lemon

And there you have it! Enjoy!

It’s the first week of February. How are all your resolutions and intentions coming?

This week take some time to make sure you are on the right track. Go over what you wrote down at the beginning of January, or if you didn’t write it, now’s the time to get out some paper and pens and do it. Lay out the month of February for yourself and set 1-5 intentions in all categories of your life. I like to use: Career, Fitness, Food, Personal Potential, and Fun.

So here we go for mine:

3-2-1 GO!

Be Fearless!

What do you fear?

Fear is a powerful feeling. It can stop you in your tracks; it can keep you from your highest potential.

What are you afraid of?

I see a lot of different people and the majority of people I see are operating their lives in fear. But it’s not a fear you would think of. Most of the fear I see in people, and in myself, is fear of getting everything you want; that voice that tells you you don’t deserve the greatest things you desire, the voice that tells you you can’t do certain things; the voice that tells you to stay in your comfort zone. We all have that voice. .

Here is something I want you to burn into your brain: If you want to grow, you must step outside your comfort zone.

So I charge you this week to step outside of your zone. Do something spontaneous. Do something you are afraid to do. Go to that networking thing you’ve been nervous to go to. Tackle that workout that you hate to do. Call an old friend you’ve been meaning to talk to. Quit your job and start your own business.

THE KEY HERE IS TO FOLLOW YOUR HEARTS DESIRE… even if you are afraid. Even if you don’t know what will happen. All you need to do in life is “stay tuned.”

If there is something you have wanted to accomplish but haven’t because of fear, make it a priority now to focus on it. Set an intention around it. Today at Time to Thrive Barb Wade gave us a great exercise to do around fear. In case you were not there, here’s what you can do.

Divide a piece of paper in half with a line. On the left side write “limiting beliefs” at the top, and on the right side right “inner wisdom”, “god’s voice,” “love”, whatever feels good to you. In the left side, write down all the negative self talk that comes to you surrounding your fear of doing your “thing.” In the right side, write down what your inner wisdom would say to you if it heard you telling yourself, for example, “I have to do this because I need to an example for my clients and you are a big hypocrite if you don’t do it perfect all the time.”

My inner wisdom is a lot like the voice of a good friend who always has wise and comforting words. My inner wisdom always speaks the truth. It says in response: “Honey, being human and being open about making mistakes is the BEST example you can be. You don’t HAVE to do anything and especially not for anyone but yourself. You will drain yourself dry if you try to be perfect all the time, you already are perfect…you are exactly enough.”

Try this with your fears. Just writing that makes me feel so light and fluffy. The lessons we learn are endless and infinite; and I guarantee you will get one when you finally tackle that thing you are afraid of doing.

Have a FEARLESS week.

Create your Own Reality

“The decision you make today is often not the choice you make tomorrow.”

Does this sentence resonate with you? That sentence is a direct quote from God via the book Conversations with God, Book 2 in which I am love with by Neale Walsch. I read this and I knew I would be writing about this for this week’s inspire me Monday.

What does this mean exactly? We have all experienced this in one way or another. For me it comes to mind with food choices. Every night I go to bed thinking “Tomorrow will be a perfectly clean day, no faults, no exceptions.” And then tomorrow comes and I go to an event or get a craving or blah blah blah, you know the drill… I eat something I decided I would not eat the day before. Sound like anyone else?

What I read in Conversations with God that made me go YES! Is this: The secret of all masters is to keep choosing the same thing.

It’s that simple people. Just keep choosing the same thing over and over again until it is a part of your reality. Another word for this: practice. So in my case, with food, as I am learning, is that it may take me years to fully manifest the habits I decide upon every night without effort. But the more I keep CHOOSING this reality of effortless food decision making, the better my chances are of creating a reality where I always make the food choices I want to make.

This is the power in choice. When you choose, choose it with all your heart. Go full throttle into it without fear. Keep moving toward it until you’ve accomplished what you want. Don’t take NO for an answer. Whatever you call forth, you will receive. And if all you call forth is “I want to make better decisions” that is exactly what you will get; the experience of wanting. Choose “I WILL make better decisions.”

Lastly, be careful of expectations. You must be open to whatever comes to you.

“If you are not Careful, you will Drown in your Expectations”

Growth requires a step into the unknown. Often we see growth as trouble and standing still as safe. So jump in, keep choosing what you want to manifest, and stay open. Have an Amazing Week!

Primal Hazelnut Butter Chocolate Chip Muffins (AKA Nutella Muffins!)

012 A funny sequence of events happened to me in the past few weeks. The clinic I work at gets a monthly addition of Sunset Magazine and every month I flip through looking for recipes I can modify. In December I saw they had a recipe for Hazelnut Butter Muffins made with Hazelnut flour in them. I was intrigued at hazelnut flour, but hadn’t really tried to find it knowing that the ingredients I would need to make a paleo muffin with hazelnut flour would require expensive ingredients like hazelnut oil.

So I was floored to find a package of hazelnut flour in a holiday package Diego and I received.I felt like this was my calling now, and I had to suck it up and buy the ingredients I needed to experiment with this flour.

What I planned to be Applesauce Hazelnut Butter muffins ended up being Chocolate Chip Hazelnut butter muffins and they turned out delicious!

These muffins have some weirdo ingredients like hazelnut oil and hazelnut butter. I made my own Hazelnut butter, which was super easy. I would suppose that using an oil that is less expensive but lacks a strong flavor like grapeseed oil would work just as well.

You Need:

1 Cup Blanched Almond Flour

1 Cup Hazelnut flour

1 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp sea salt

1/2 cup Hazelnut butter

3 large eggs

1 cup unsweetened Applesauce ( I like 365 brand, it’s super smooth)

1 tbsp vanilla

3 tbsp agave nectar (can be omitted if you choose)

1/4 cup grape seed oil

2 tsp hazelnut oil

1 cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350.

In a small bowl, mix the dry ingredients well. In a large bowl mix the wet ingredients well. Leave the chocolate chips for later.

Mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and then fold in the chocolate Chips.

Place batter in muffin cup lined muffin pan 3/4 full. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Take Care of You first

It’s the second full week in January. What have you done to keep yourself flowing in abundance?

I know that the first few weeks in January can be a busy and stressful time as people come back to reality and things start to flow again and I thought it might be time for a little reminder.

As the unofficial spokesperson for taking care of you first, I am here to remind you to do just that. No matter what’s going on in your life, whether you feel on track or not, you need to remember this simple question: “what am I doing today that is just for me?”

What is one thing you can do a day that will satisfy your spirit? Not even just you, your deeper self… what does it want?

Did you know that our primal ancestors spent 9 hours a day sleeping, napping, resting and 6 hours doing leisurely activities consisting of play or family/group activities. Guess what that looks like today? On average we spend less than 7 hours sleeping, 9 hours working, and 2 hours commuting to work.

We have our priorities mixed up sometimes because of stress about money or relationships. We spend so much time making sure we have enough money by filling our schedules with work first before we fill it with activities for ourselves or with our families that by the time it’s all done, when people say “I just don’t have time to fit in cooking or exercise” I believe them because I can see their schedules.

But I have a secret to tell you, YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOUR OWN SCHEDULE! If you are so busy, it’s because you made it that way. And you can change it. Here is a simple solution:

1) Get out three different colored markers and your schedule.

2) Mark out the hours a day you spend doing work activities with one color.

3) Mark out the hours a day you spend doing things for YOU with another color.

4) Mark out the hours a day you spend doing fun things or spending time with family/friends.

When you have done this you will have an eagle eye view of your day/week. If you have a lot of WORK color and no YOU color, then you need to change that.

I personally like to see an equal amount of me time vs play time. You need to figure out what works for you. The best thing you can do to clean up your schedule is clearly decide when and how much you time you will devote to your working hours and mark them clearly. DO NOT schedule working activities outside these hours and especially not in time that is YOU time.

Have a wonderful week and take some time for yourself!

I really want to get healthy… but I need to get healthy first

exercise-cartoon This phrase sometimes makes me want to punch things: “I really want to start working out with you or come to one of your classes, but I need to get in shape first.”

Really, when I hear this it’s sort of like in a Tarantino movie when the heroine first sees those who have betrayed her and that alarm noise comes on as if she’s about to explode.

OK maybe that’s too extreme, but I think you get the point. This phrase is an absurd statement. It’s like saying, “I really want to get healthy and I want you to help me, but give me like 6 months to get healthy first and then we’ll talk.”

While I completely understand where it comes from, this is also more where my anger comes from. The idea that people are so worried about what other people will think of them working hard to get healthy and reach a goal that is important to them that it would hinder their ability to move forward in life is just sad.

When someone tells me this I can figure out a few things:

1) The person can’t think of a better excuse to say they don’t want to work with me

2) The person is very self conscious and there are some inner things around that we need to work on before we can get to the real meat and potatoes of a fitness goal

3) The person would like to work with me, but part of them is a little afraid to go to the previously mentioned place in order to move forward.

4) The person has tried to achieve this particular goal many times before and is afraid of failure or has lost the belief in themselves that they can actually achieve this goal.

Usually, it’s a combination of all of these things. The overlying thing here is FEAR. And I am willing to argue it’s not so much fear of failure, it’s FEAR OF SUCCESS!

Why? Why would someone be afraid of succeeding? There are lots of reasons. Humans just have a tendency to limit the amount of pleasurable things we can feel and receive. Feeling great about your body and health is definitely on that list, and a huge road block for people because the truth is, being overweight and eating foods that are unhealthy keep people unconscious, keep them “safe”, and keep them feeling psychologically comfortable.

So if you find yourself saying to people that you’d like to start working out or eating better, but you “need to get healthy first”…. PAY MORE ATTENTION TO YOURSELF. Your body is crying out for you to do something. It might not even be to exercise or to eat better. There are many steps you can take to begin living a more healthful life like

· Focusing on sleeping better

· Go for walks outside when it’s nice and enjoy nature and life

· Working with a life coach/energy coach etc to help you move forward ( i.e. I do this sort of thing as well as fitness training)

· See a wonderful B.E.S.T. practitioner like Dr. Audrey

· Focus on doing one thing a day that makes you happy

· Hang out with friends and family

· Stay present

· Cherish life

I could go on and on. So, YES, exercise is an important part of feeling healthy and YES, eating well is also key, but the biggest factor is YOUR WILLINGNESS TO JUMP INTO THE UNKNOWN AND BE OPEN TO CHANGE AND POSSIBILITY. No expectations, no rules, no shoulds, no thinking, no efforting, all you have to do is be open to change and know that your openness will bring you the answers, messages, and guidance you need to get your body where it wants to be.
